What is your most memorable wedding?
I can't really choose the most memorable. I find that there are aspects of each one that I've photographed that stick in my mind: whether it's tears for mum/dad who have passed away, or dad in a wheelchair who manages to stand to give his speech, or a very poorly dad managing to walk his daughter down the aisle, or outrageous stories about the Groom from the Best Man. They are all memorable and there is many a time I've been glad to have my camera to cover a tear or two of my own when things get really emotional.
Describe your style in 5 adjectives.
Friendly, unobtrusive, flexible, committed & professional.
What about your business are you most proud of?
The flexibility we offer. We have found that no two weddings are the same. We can do what you want when you want it. My partner Martin has even been known to stand in as an MC to announce the arrival of the Bride and Groom to the Wedding Party at the Wedding Breakfast!
What is your No. 1 wedding planning tip for couples?
When you pick your venue, consider where your pictures will be if it rains. Consider where your pictures will be if you get married in summer and there is bright, unforgiving overhead sunshine causing everybody to squint. Look for shady areas outside for summer sun and spacious indoor areas for rain.
Be prepared to be utterly fed up with having your picture taken. It is quite hard to spend all day smiling and sometimes, brides reach a point where they've just had enough.... be ready to feel like this and tell your photographer so they can leave you alone for a while.
What is your favourite personal touch you have seen at a wedding?
Asking the Mother of the Bride to light a candle in memory of her deceased husband (father of the bride) before the commencement of the Wedding Breakfast - not a dry eye in the house.
Describe your typical process with a couple.
Meeting before booking - got to make sure we all get on.
Attend any Church rehearsal - got to know who the important people are.
Partner photographs the Groom while I cover Bridal Prep.
Both of us photographing during the ceremony.
Crowd herding during family formals.
Candid/unobtrusive photographs prior to Speeches.
Retire during speeches - nobody ever looked good whilst eating.
Photograph speeches.
Take the Bride & Groom off, away from guests for photographs for about 30 mins.
Return for cake cut and First Dance.
Check all photographs that needed to be taken have been taken.
Head home.
What is the No. 1 photo that you think every couple should take?
I think that if you have a good photographer, then all requested pictures will be taken. However, if you hire a photographer that ONLY does candid (not posed), pictures, then be prepared for not getting any pictures of just the two of you alone!
What is the most original photo you’ve been asked to take at a wedding?
I've never been asked to take a specific picture. If there are important elements of the day that are important, then I normally get told 'can you make sure you take a picture of XXX', but nobody has ever asked for anything specific. As I've done many weddings, I think my brides are happy to let me take pictures of whatever catches my eye.
What do you recommend for a rainy day wedding?
Speak with your photographer and discuss other locations within your venue(s) for your photographs to be taken.
